Obstetric and Gynaecology

The department is divided into three firms, each with three consultants supported by resident’s doctors and interns. Each unit has a separate activity weekly. There are three antenatal clinics per week. These hold on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. These clinics hold in the mornings. There are also three gynaecological clinics which hold on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. These clinics hold in the afternoon. Patients are booked for antenatal care services on Mondays and Fridays and these clinics hold in the mornings. Postnatal clinic also run on Fridays. Ward rounds are conducted on all patients on a daily basis by resident doctors. There are three consultant ward rounds per week each for each firm. Emergency obstetrics and gynaecological surgical cases are attended to on a daily basis while each firm has its own operation days for elective cases. Patients that require colpsocopic examination and cryotherapy are attended to during the gynaecological outpatient clinics.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

The departmental seminar holds every Wednesday from 2pm – 5pm while Residents seminar holds every Monday from 9am – 10am. Bedside teaching holds on Saturdays 9.00am – 11.00am. Journal club holds on Tuesdays 5.00pm. There is also morning review of all cases managed on the previous day by those on call Monday to Friday. There is a medical library with internet facility in the hospital. There is a departmental library within the hospital, stocked with Local and International Journals of repute. These include British Journal of O & G, Tropical Journal of O & G, West Africa Journal of Medicine, Sexual Health Matters, Nigeria Journal of Clinical practice among others. The library has internet access and we are fast developing our departmental e-library.
