DELEGATION FROM WHO/ MINISTRY OF HEALTH VISITS UNIOSUN TEACHING HOSPITAL, OSOGBO AHEAD OF LABORATORY GAP ASSESSMENT EXERCISE

A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme paid a working visit to the hospital recently to invite and  notify the hospital of the  Laboratory Gap Assessment Exercise organized by  Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare with the support from the World Health Organization (WHO)

Speaking during the visit, the leader of the delegation Mr. Hamzat Omotayo commended the hospital Management for their dedication to providing quality healthcare services disclosing that the visit  is aimed to notify the management of the  plans of the  Ministry of Health to conduct Laboratory Gap Assessment across selected states  and its ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria's laboratory system and advance national health security priorities.

Mr. Omotayo emphasized that the assessment exercise which is scheduled to hold from 13th to 17th July 2026 is designed to identify gaps, challenges and opportunities  across laboratory networks also to evaluate existing capacities and generate evidence to guide strategic planning and targeted interventions for sustainable improvement of laboratory services nationwide.

In his response, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Babatunde Afolabi welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for the advance notification. 

The CMD reaffirmed the hospital's continuous commitment to collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and NASCP in its efforts to  strengthen laboratory systems and improving healthcare delivery assuring the delegation of its readiness to cooperate fully during the laboratory gap assessment exercise.

While expressing confidence that the findings would contribute to improving laboratory services and patient care, Dr. Afolabi further solicited the support of the Ministry in the acquisition of modern high tech equipment at the Histopathology,  the Blood Bank of the hospital and the upgrade of the hospital morgue.

In attendance were the Head, IHVN Department, Prof. Victor Mabayoje, Head, Medical Laboratory Service, Mrs Hassan, Dr. Tijani Busira Adesina and other  members of the team from the Ministry of Health.
